I have been fishing for many years now so I am not a fishing newbie but I am not sure about lure colors and how water clarity and weather conditions effect what would be the best choices. I like fishing spinners and crank baits and am asking for tips on color selection in specific conditions. I fish the mississippi river backwaters so the water is usually pretty murky and dark.

When fishing with crakbaits, i gennerally like to match the hatch… In murky water, you want to use firetiger colors…You also want to use gold… (gold produces lots of flash in dark water) With spinnerbaits, like to use a big spinnerbait, with big colorado blades.(A big lure choice and high vibration is a necessity for fishing murky water) i'd also go with white, yellow/orance, red, or gold… pretty much, if it looks very bright in the murky water it's good… sometimes, people will go the other way around and pick a black or brown colored spinner bait… Experiment with different colors… (I like to use big, bright colored lures that make lots of vibration in murky water)
I think the best lures to use out there is the senko worm by Gary Yamammoto. You want to use a darker worm (black or watermelon with red speckles) in the case of the mississippi. You want to use an off-set hook that is a 3/0 or a 2/0. The worm itself should be about 5 or 6 inches long. You want to rig it up texas style (weedless) without any weights. Look online for that set-up. It will give you a more natural presentation. Make your cast near some structure or weed beds and let the lure sink all the way to the bottom, wait a second, and then lift your rod tip to 12 o'clock and let it drop down. Repeat one more time and then slowly retrieve back to the boat or shore (repeat the same process a few more times). Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Russell – General rule is to use darker color lures in clear water and brighter color lures in murky water. If there are weeds and grass in the water, make sure you use a weedless lure or a lure with a weedless hook. As far as the water temperature getting cooler – just remember that the cooler the water, the slower the fish will move – so your lure presentation should be slower in colder water than in warmer water. Use your favorite lure for the type of fish you’re after, just remember the tips I’ve shared above and you should have a fun successful trip!
